Roman-era vila and road discovered in UK's Midlands
#1
Archaeologists may be on the verge of finding something big Mery Ole England. Last year an ancient Roman villa was discovered on a farm in Rutland, as mentioned in this November 2021 blog post from Historic England.

And just this month a portion of an ancient Roman road leading to that villa has been discovered, as this story in the Birmingham Mail explains.

While I'm sure time hasn't been kind to the full road and the villas (farms) and towns along its path, it does seem there may be a buried network of historic locations waiting to be discovered in the Midlands.

I hope to update this thread with more stories about related discoveries in the future.

Meanwhile, roads around here barely last 20 to 30 years (thanks to heavy traffic and frost heaving). I wonder if archaeologists 3,000 years from now will recognize modern roads by the gravel bed laid underneath them rather than any surface we drive on?

I guess it depends on a number of factors. I don't have any examples to share, but in years past I've read about ancient or medieval road pathways that were uncovered, where the original paving stones had been removed by people centuries ago.

Our superhighways might leave very easily discernable traces even after the pavements have decayed away (or been removed) via the superstructures that support them, including drainage ditches, rebar skeletons, earthen embankments, built up exit ramps, and more.
