I'm not sure how much buzz this is creating. I'm not enough of a gamer to care, but I do care about the John Carter character. I guess any development is good.

John Carter is the planet-hopping hero that was conceived over 100 years ago by genre-defining writer, Burroughs. As well as being the central character in 11 novels since 1912, he has featured in various comic book incarnations, tabletop games and a feature film, spanning several decades. Carter's adventures have left a lasting cultural legacy, inspiring writers and scientists like Ray Bradbury, Jerry Siegal, and Carl Sagan. He also profoundly influenced series like Flash Gordon and blockbusters like George Lucas' Star Wars and James Cameron's Avatar. Gamers now have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Burroughs' epic fantasy world.

The creative work on the game is well underway, and Tanglewood Games has been appointed by FNCPR as the lead developer for the project.

The voice cast includes two BAFTA winners. David Elliott takes the lead role of Carter, Brian Bovell as Tars Tarkas, and Kezia Burrows playing the Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris.

Starting in 1945 at the end of WWII, the gameplay will centre on the soldier John Carter, working on a mission to find Hitler's secret projects general, Hans Kammler. Kammler is experimenting with a new technology that ultimately transports John Carter to Mars, known to its inhabitants as "Barsoom."

This echoes the dimension-shifting narrative of the original novels and comics, in which the American Civil War veteran dramatically found himself transcending worlds and fighting for the inhabitants of Mars.

Thanks for posting this, I had no heard. Seems like an odd choice to move it to WWII era. The actual studio developing the game doesn't seem to have any experience building a full game from the ground up. They've worked on some big titles, though. I'm a little disappointed to see it's a first-person game, but we'll see what develops.

I guess they wanted a scientifical explanation for how Carter gets to Mars. Of course, how do you explain a vast civilization on (20th century) Mars, which we've now explored (partially) and found to be (so far as we know) lifeless?

John Carter's Mars can't really be in our universe - it would have to be in an alternate reality.

I signed up for email updates on their website. They're going the crowdfunding direction, so this isn't a Disney backed project by any means. If there is anything in the works for a show on Disney+, it doesn't look like this has anything to do with it. I'm a bit skeptical now, as I've been part of several of these campaigns, and they usually don't turn out well.

Well, since the ERB estate controls the rights, I guess they could license the game and TV show rights to different entities. That is what the Saul Zaentz company did for many years with the Tolkien properties they controlled before they got the movie deal in 1998. I met the owner of Toy Vault, who did the Middle-earth Toys action figures in the 1990s. His rights were based on the books, and separate from the role-playing games and previous film productions. Of course, Warner Bros. [well, New Line Cinema before WB got them] made all that go away.

That's probably exactly what's happening. Oddly enough, it seems Ian Flemming has a cameo in the game. Go figure. Not sure what drove them to that. Maybe they're trying to signal that they want to do a James Bond game in the future.

Looks like the crowdfunding campaign is tanking. They've only got $5300 so far. Generally, I think big dollar fundraisers like this (they're looking for just over half a million dollars) need to have a massive opening and be at least halfway to their goal a few days in.

If they're depending on this fundraiser to continue work, it looks like this game will not happen. Video games are massive undertakings. Even seasoned pros with decades of experience at top companies tend to fail when they strike out on their own and go the crowdfunding route. Even if they have a successful campaign, it's never enough money, and by the time the game finally comes out, most people have lost interest. For the few fanatics that have been hyped-up and eagerly awaiting it for years (literally), ultimately it can't possibly live up to what they hoped for.

It's just a weird concept. I don't see it having broad appeal.

John Carter was big when the books were being pushed by DoubleDay and the comic books were in full production mode. There's just so much buzz about other projects out there that anything the ERB estate does at this point is drowned out.

It could work, but the more I look at it, the more it looks like watered-down nonsense. I'm kind of glad it will likely never see the light of day. If they aren't going to respect the source material, they shouldn't do it at all.

Seems like everyone wants to update the material in order to tell the story. That's worked with traditional fairy tales but doesn't work so well with science fiction and fantasy franchises. But they could probably build up a fan base if they run with multiple pre-release disclosures.

The John Carter movie grossed over $300 million in box office sales and did pretty well in DvD sales, but the lack of advance marketing killed the movie and turned into a box office disaster.
