You've probably watched TV shows and movies where props representing things you know well look nothing like in real life. This video explains why movie weapons and armor look the way they do but his point is really applicable to anything from computers to kitchens. Think about the Brady Bunch house, which was designed for television and didn't reflect real life home design.

This is a fascinating explanation of how movie weapons and armor are designed and why a design might depart from accuracy even though everyone involved in the production knows what it is supposed to look like.

Speaking of the Brady Bunch house, the exterior of the house was a real house in California. The interior looked nothing like the TV show. But last year a TV network funded a renovation project for the house to make it match (as closely as possible) the house that generations of kids have seen on TV.
