Lord of Rings money maker
How much has it made?
Don't insult the precious, my precious!:book:
Seems reasonable. A smaller part of the puzzle, not included in those estimates, would include all the restaurants and secondary projects (from people like me) that earned income on the basis of "fair use".

I doubt all that would amount to $1 billion. But there have been a few best sellers in books by Tolkien scholars (like Tom Shippey) and not-so-scholarly people (like David Day) that might have generated hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars in sales.

Many small businesses (mostly restaurants, in my experience) were built on LoTR/Hobbit themes.
The average price assumption on the books is likely inflated. My first copy of the trilogy ran me under nine dollars in the early 1980s. Yes, there was a spike of sales around the release of the movies, but those were at about the 15 dollar level for paperbacks. I do have the $100 Centenary edition in hardback, but I still think the overall average is lower than the $15 estimate in the article.
Always after a defeat and a respite, the Shadow takes another shape and grows again.

I don't have any humble opinions.
On the other hand, the estimate in the article excludes Amazon’s quarter billion rights fee

People have been trying to estimate the revenues generated by Tolkien's literature for over 20 years. It became a passion for some after J.K. Rowling's books surpassed Tolkien's in world-wide sales. And I've seen some discussions in years past about George R.R. Martin's revenue compared to Tolkien's.

I don't really see the point of all these debates. It's not like I'm getting any of the money. Smile
