I have no idea, but what difference would it make if he did? Is it a question of competence, or loyalty?

I'm pretty sure the U.S. military had and still has incredibly detailed payroll records from the era, plus countless contemporaries of his wrote autobiographies, plus there are the actual newspapers from the era. So yes, I'm sure there is proof if one were to go looking.

Custer did employ Native American scouts. All the cavalry companies of the era that were deployed in the West used them. Custer employed Crow scouts, who survived the battle and provided some of the details of what happened. 5 of them returned to the battlefield a year later with then-2nd Lieutenant Hugh Lenox Scott, who was assigned to the 7th Cavalry after the battle and sent to mark grave sites. He interviewed many of the Native Americans who participated in the battle on both sides.
