Updating classic novels and movies for modern audiences

Is that a good idea? They have made modern versions of Shakespeare plays and Tom Sawyer.

If it's done well. The Lion King is basically Hamlet, and Avatar is basically Dances With Wolves/The Last Samurai/Pocahontas/Ferngully.  And 7 Samurai and Yojimbo did fine when updated as Magnificent Seven and Fistful of Dollars.

Shakespeare actually did modern dress in his own plays, that is Caesar and Brutus didn't wear togas. Good text will never be harmed, and could be helped.

As for today's Tom Sawyer, He gets by on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you
No, his mind is not for rent
To any God or government
Always hopeful yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is
