They are the bad guys. We're still waiting on the good guys to show up.

The good guys have been there all along. The Khurds were fighting ISIL (preferred form now) as soon as they appeared. The history of the Middle East would have been very different if the British had supported the Khurdish state back in the early 20th C. Instead they made the artificial country of Iraq to consolidate access to oil, and treated the Khurds as terrorists because they objected.

The RAF perfected their techniques by bombing Khurdish villages. It's a sorry period of history, and there were many in the military who disagreed with the government policy. They saw the Khurds as friends and allies in the region and thought it was a mistake to treat them as the enemy. And the rest is history.

The latest atrocity has been the destruction of the museum in Mosul, after looting all the small stuff. Nowhere near as bad as all the slaughter but an indication of the policy of cultural annihilation which has always been a part of domination. Only now are other nations in the region becoming active in their opposition to ISIL, with Jordan and Egypt throwing their weight in to the fight. This is preferable than sending in the armies of the West again, which would simply confuse and exacerbate the situation.

[edit] I would recommend a new production by Adam Curtis ('The Power of Nightmares' etc) called 'Bitter Lake'. Unfortunately it's only available on the BBC website but it should be available on DVD soon. I wouldn't be surprised if was a torrent already. It gives a broader understanding of why the Middle East is the way it is now.

Well, there is a lot of speculation across the Internet about how ISIS manages to be what it is. The real story is hidden behind a thousand faces and it really doesn't make much difference at this point what the truths are. They are a threat to the entire world. More importantly the ideas they espouse are a threat to the entire world because even if we can destroy both Al Qaeda and ISIS their ideas will probably live on and be reborn through other groups.

The whole region is a perennial powder keg and tinder box that will erupt into a much larger conflagration probably before the decade is out. Obama made sure Iran has nuclear weapons, which goes a long way towards that.

Most Syrians believe ISIS was created by the US and its allies.

Obama publicly claims to be assisting in the fight against ISIS, but documents obtained by the rightist watchdog group Judicial Watch through the FIA confirm the Obama administration worked with other Persian Gulf nations as well as Turkey, in an effort to train and aid radical Islamic groups in their quest to overthrow the Assad regime in Syria (Declassified DIA Documents Reveal Obama Administration Ordered CIA to Train ISIS-Examiner.Com).

I am still trying to figure out how they sell all that oil they have supposedly been shipping off. Russia accused Turkey of being the buyer or transportation point. It's just hard to imagine how anyone could want to buy that oil given the glut of oil on the markets right now.
