True Blood cast - big names in teeny guest roles
#1
So the show started out with a number of talented unknowns from the NY stage (Sam Trammell, Rutina Wesley, Nelsan Ellis, Carrie Preston) and from overseas (Stephen Moyer from the UK, Ryan Kwanten from Australia, Alexander Skarsgard from Sweden) to back up the only "name band" star, Anna Paquin.

But in the last couple of seasons, there are a LOT of fairly well known folks turning up in smallish to medium-sized roles, following the lead of Michelle Forbes, who memorably played season 2's big bad. Here are some:

- Chris Meloni - Elliot from Law & Order: SVU for the last decade, appears this season as Roman, the vamp we thought was this season's big bad.
- Linda Purl - she played Debbie Pelt's grieving mother in a couple of eps, but was a highly visible starlet back in the 70's, playing the lead in The Young Pioneers tv movies and series, and Andy Griffith's daughter on Matlock. She also has had recurring roles in Happy Days, the soap opera Secret Storm, and most recently Homeland and The Office, and was in films like Crazy Mama and mini-series like The Last Days of Pompeii and The Manions of America. BTW, Debbie's dad is played by Steve Rankin, not a big star, but he had a remarkably similar role in Buffy as Tara's father.
- Peter Mensah - he's the Authority chancellor who appears to be from Africa; we've seen in him in films like 300 (as the messenger on the receiving end of "THIS IS SPARTA!!") and in the Spartacus series.
- Tina Majorino - she plays Molly, the web-savvy tech guru for the Authority, who tells Eric and Bill they're going to be i-staked, then chirpily says "Peace out!" She was the little girl with the tattoo in Waterworld, and the (quasi) love-interest in Napoleon Dynamite.
- Alfre Woodard is back as Lafayette's mother - we know her from First Contact, but she has won a Golden Globe, 3 SAG Awards, 4 Emmy Awards (out of 17  nominations!) and been nominated for an Oscar and a Grammy. Not too shabby, given that Trek was just about the only "hit" film she was ever in.
- William Schallert (The Patty Duke Show, Trouble With Tribbles, and 350+ other credits) has made a few appearances as the mayor of Bontemps.
- Gary Cole - he was just seen for a minute or two as Sookie's grandfather, but has starred in everything from Fatal Vision to The Brady Bunch Movie. BTW, Jeffrey Nicholas Brown, who plays Sookie's dad in a couple of dream sequences, appeared on Buffy as a random vamp at the end of season 6, right after Tara died.
- Fiona Shaw - season 4's big bad, and a well-known film actress (who got naked with Patrick Bergin in Mountains of the Moon!)
- Lynne Collins - the once and future Dejah Thoris. She doesn't really count, though, because she was a guest all the way back in the first season, pre-X-Men.
- Melissa Rauch - she was the teeny little girl that Hoyt's mama tried to fix him up with (she offered him her biscuits! ) but she's a regular on The Big Bang Theory as Howard's girlfriend, Bernadette.

Add another: Robert Patrick, aka the Terminator T-1000, and Agent Doggett from The X-Files, as Alcide's father. Smile

And another - he's actually been on the show since the first season, but usually just for one or two scenes here and there every year - John Billingsley, aka Dr. Phlox from Enterprise, as the Bontemps coroner.

Not to derail the thread, but does Billingsley ever play any type of character other than doctors and scientists? I certainly enjoy his work (he was one of the more memorable secondary actors in Cusack's "2012").

I haven't seen too much of his other work, but his Wikipedia entry says:

Quote:Billingsley made an appearance in an episode of The X-Files, playing a friend of the Lone Gunmen who turns out to be a government spy.

Billingsley is well known to fans of the series Cold Case for his guest appearance in the show's second season, playing serial killer George Marks, the only killer on the show to have gotten away with murder. Billingsley would later reprise the role in the season finale, in which Marks was killed. He also appeared as a blunt force victim in the first season of Six Feet Under to become the "Death of the week" in episode "The New Person".

Billingsley appeared in the first season of the series Prison Break as the mysterious Terrence Steadman, brother of the Vice President, whose death is faked to frame Lincoln Burrows for murder.

In May 2007 he appeared on NCIS as a blind photographer in the episode, "In The Dark".

In 2008 ... he guest starred as John Harris, the father of the Kiss-Me-Not Killer, in "Never Tell", an episode of Women's Murder Club.

In August 2010, he guest starred in an episode of the TNT series Leverage as Corswell, the head of security at the Boston Museum of Art and Antiquities. In November that year he guest starred as amateur psychic Ellis Mars in "Red Moon", an episode of The Mentalist.

In August 2011 Billingsley starred in an episode of the USA Network drama Suits as the company accountant who is being released for never finishing university.

Next season - Rutger Hauer! Details at Blastr.com.

Quote:Hauer will play a character named Macklyn who is said to be a "mysterious and sinister figure with deep ties to Sookie and Jason.

Hmmm... I'm thinking Warlow...
