We went to see this movie last week and we loved it. Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli Studios make such interesting films we couldn't help but want to see their take on this story, which American audiences first grew to know as "The Borrowers" (based on a book by the same name).
In terms of animation it doesn't really introduce any new concepts. It's just good, old-fashioned Disneyesque animation drawn in Japanese style. But the story is quite charming and the characterizations are interesting enough that the adults in the audience were as riveted as the kids.
Yes, it's a kids' movie -- but it's the kind of kids movie that adults don't mind watching. I suspect it may become a favorite with young audiences of all ages.
Reading a story about diminutive people in a large world has been popular at least since Gulliver's Travels, although I suppose Greek mythology contributed a great deal to the concept with stories of the Greek heroes facing down Titans and Cyclopes.
If you're not sure about whether you should see "Arriety" I would say most people will probably be mildly surprised that it's as enjoyable as it is.
