Confirmed: J.J. Abrams to direct "Star Trek 2"
#1
Vulture reports that J.J. Abrams will begin directing "Star Trek 2" this winter. Work on the script continues but should be finished in a few weeks.

It appears that Alex Kurtzman's busy schedule has been one of the big factors in delaying work on "Star Trek 2" and keeping J.J. in the "hopeful" category.

They really need to get it started but good to hear that J.J. is on board.
I can imagine quite a bit.

I sort of wonder how far they can take the reboot of the franchise. I mean, how many years are these guys (actors and producers) willing to commit to the franchise, given all the other projects they get into?

That is a very very good question, given that a couple really could be on the fast track to bigger things. Pine, as a leading man, could theoretically do just like Shatner (or Connery, or Daniel Craig, or Pierce Brosnan in the Bond films) and play unrelated leads in other projects while still playing Kirk as often as he can. And actors like Quinto and Cho might easily accept that they are likely to remain character actors, and this could be a dependable steady gig. Saldana and Yelchin appear to be the ones most likely to develop careers as leading actors on their own, in which case they might become less and less interested in continuing to do supporting roles in Trek.

Of course it doesn't all have to be about Kirk. Star Trek has at least established that other captains can take the spotlight, so they could promote one of the supporting roles to the rank of Captain and give him/her a ship to play with if everyone else gets tired. New writers could come in and write those adventures if/when JJ and the lads decide to move on.

Plus the actors will demand a salary increase for each movie which reduces the profit margin for the studio. At some point, it's time to bring Star Trek back to the small screen.

I'm sure they have already discussed tv at some level, especially since, as Michael pointed out, the way the 80's version developed, the films grew to include a big enough audience that a smaller version of that was viable for tv. And like he said, that could be a different crew entirely, whether focused on someone introduced as a supporting character in the films who gets a spin-off (the obvious choice would be Rachel Nichols's Orion character, but you'd sure hate for the poor girl to have to paint herself green every day) or a different crew and ship entirely.

You know with the several Internet-based fan fiction video shows about Star Trek's universe, I wonder if they might not consider trying something official in the online world at some point. The model has not yet proven itself viable as anything other than a springboard on to cable, but Star Trek could probably give it a pretty good shot.
