Enthusiastic science fiction fans around the world flocking to learn Avatar's Na'vi
#1
Thousands of people have signed up to learn Na'vi for free. The language has only 1,000 words in its vocabulary but according to this fascinating article language creator Paul Frommer has invited 20 Na'vi experts (and linguists?) from around the world to help expand the language's vocabulary.

That same article also says a University of British Columbia professor is studying world-wide adoption of Na'vi for inspiration on ways to help save dying languages. It's a bit long but well worth the read, in my opinion. This is a concrete example of how science fiction made a positive contribution to our way of life.
