The artcle suggests that Tolkien visited the cave while working on LotR. However, Gollum already appeared in The Hobbit, written in the 1930s. Therefore the inspiration cannot have come to him on these visits. That doesn't mean to say he wasn't aware of the place or the word gollum though.

Meh. There are some obvious experiences that Tolkien drew from, and then there's a great mosaic where bits and pieces come together to form a whole. It's almost impossible to say that any one place, experience or event prompted Tolkien's imagery. Parts of every place that he ever visited likely found some home in his writing.

I"m pretty sure that Tolkien is now so big in England that every community that can find a Tolkien connection will do so. And why shouldn't they take pride in one of their greatest authors? I hope they do this for J.K. Rowling, too -- but I do get a bit flabbergasted at some of the claims I've come across.
