The parasitic Puppet Master idea is so cliched, it's no longer amusing. Not to me, but for some reason, casual SF fans still gobble it up.

I think it depends on whether the story itself is compelling. You can play out the What If situation in many different ways. Really, the best story would explore the psychology and motivation of the aliens. I have not read her book, however.

My sister in-law introduced me to Twilight, and she now recommends the Host as being, in her opinion, better.
Another friend says the same. Not having read it, I can't give a personal opinion, but perhaps it's worth giving a chance.
