Yep, that film with Liam Neeson as the deadly former spy guy whose stunningly beautiful young daughter is kidnapped?

She's the daughter! :hellohands:

She's brunette, and playing age 17 (she's still just 25) but this is the 2nd # 1 movie she's been in (the other being "The Fog.")

From Reuters:

Quote:LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Thriller "Taken," starring Liam Neeson as a former spy who must rescue his daughter from modern-day slave traders, snatched the No. 1 spot at North American box offices over the weekend, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

"Taken" grabbed $24.6 million .....

.....

....January proved to be a record month in theaters with a total box office haul of more than $1 billion for the first time ever.....

The films it surpassed included:

2) Paul Blart: Mall Cop
3) The Uninvited
4) Hotel for Dogs
5) Gran Torino
6) Slumdog Millionaire
7) Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
8) New In Town (w/ Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick, Jr.)
9) My Bloody Valentine 3-D
10) Inkheart

Maggie BTW won a Screen Actors' Guild Award for being part of the Best Ensemble Cast (of Lost) in 2006.

And lest we forget those legs that make up a significant percentage of her 5'9" height:

In its 5th weekend, Taken is still at # 4 in the nation, behind 3 movies with huge built-in audiences: the new Madea movie, the new Jonas Brothers movie, and the recent Oscar-blockbuster Slumdog Millionaire (which, after winning 8 Oscars and getting three full hours of free PR to an audioence of 35 million or more pople... only made $2.2 million more than Taken did!)

The film should have by now surpassed the $100 million mark, for a pricetag of only $30 million.

As opposed to Matthew Fox's most recent film, which grossed approx. $43 million, with a pricetag of over $120 million. D'OH!

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Quote:Home-video consumers were quite taken with "Taken" during its first week in stores.....

"Taken" captured the top spot on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart and Home Media Magazine's rental chart, dusting "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," which came to DVD and Blu-ray Disc after earning $45.8 million in U.S. theaters.

"Taken," in turn, grossed $144.6 million. The film sported "Titanic"-like legs {and so does Maggie! } during its lengthy theatrical run, which began in February with an opening gross of $24.7 million. It topped the Nielsen VideoScan Blu-ray Disc sales chart, and 20 percent of its first-week sales came from Blu-ray Disc, compared with 16 percent for "Underworld."

Caught this last night, and it was quite well done for what it was, which was basically a B-movie with an A-list cast. It is in many ways a quasi-remake of the Schwarzenegger film "Commando," just less cartoonish, and no backstory of why the kidnappers want the ex-agent's daughter. Here, she's just kidnapped because she's hot and alone in Paris, and he just happens to be a lethal ex-agent.

Which is the film's main problem. Its stretches credulity with Neeson soooo worried about his 17-year-old daughter going to Paris with her friend for the summer... which teens actually do safely all the time. Within minutes of arriving she just happens to be targeted by a white-slavery-prostitution ring, and he just happens to have the skills, and contacts in Paris, to track her down.

It lifts from MANY other films including Bronso's Death Wish, Polanski's Frantic (with Harrison Ford, whom Neeson sounds a lot like when he's faking an American accent) The Professional, even a few bits from Blade Runner, and all of the Transporter'Luc Besson films (he co-wrote it, and his cinematographer directed it.) And probably a dozen Van Damme or Seagall films I've never seen. It looks VERY inexpensive, and yet moves a mile a minute. The director is REALLY efficient in editing, taking what could have been over 2 hrs. and condensing it to 93 minutes. It's quite formulaic, but enjoyable. Actually, now that I think of it, it could really have been a good Burn Notice ep, with Michael and friends called in to help a friend of a friend.

Neeson either has had some work" done - which I doubt - or his make-up artist just wanted him to look young, and caked on the pancake make-up and hair dye. It looks weird, and given that we already know he's retired, it would have worked far better for us to see him like Connery or Ford or John Wayne, with every wrinkle and gray hair on display. I hadn't realized Famke Janssen is 45 :fright: but she's still looking good as Neeson's ex-wife.

Maggie is UTTERLY convincing as a teenager (she's 26.) Somewhere along the way she has really learned how to act, and does a fine job, although we don't see her much after the first 20 minutes. To some extent her characterization is sort of stereotypical, i.e. she uses every giddy teen girl cliche in the book... but so do most girls of that age, so it works. With dark hair, she actually looks a bit like Jennifer Garner, just with smaller ears, and so the latter's performace in "13 Going on 30" come to mind too.

Liam was quite good as the vengeful dad/ex spy. It was a pretty decent film, except it made his job a little too easy. It would have benefitted the story greatly if he had to really labor for the info and favors he got on his quest. It just seemed that it all fell in his lap, except for the hands-on thrashing he doled out to the bad guys.

FYI...Katie Cassidy played Maggie's BFF who pretty much got her into trouble in the film.

I love the film. The 'interview' scene, in which he bound the Albanian mob boss to the electrified chair, was a classic.
