Garan of Yu-Lac Interesting Trivia
#1
Just thought I would share some interesting (at least to me) information that I come up with about the short story "Garen of Yu-Lac".

It seems that it was going to be a three part series in the Magazine "Spaceway Science Fiction" by Fantasy Publishing. In the Volume 4 Number 3 Sept/Oct 1969 Issue the story is marked as “Part One of Three” and then in the Volume 5 Number 1 May/June 1970 Issue part two is marked as “In Three Parts – Part Two” and the end of this part states “To Be Continued”.

However the Magazine's last issue was Volume 5 Number 1 May/June 1970. So part three was never printed. The story was not completed until it was printed as part 2 of "Garan The Eternal" Published by Fantasy, HC, 0-686-02511-3, LCCN 73160575, $4.95, 199pg ~ cover by Morris Scott Dollens {Brown Cloth Boards}

That is just how the publishing world goes. Especially those small magazines, from small publishing houses.

It appears that those parts 1 and two were joined into "Garan of Yu-Lac" in GARAN THE ETERNAL, and part 3 was re-titled as "Garan of Tav"

Warning "People of the Crater" was published in FANTASY BOOK 1, Vol 1,No 1, in 1947, and then was re-titled to "Garan of Tav"

Things can be even more complicated than they appear.

Well now - To me what you have posted really does not ring true.

The Book "Garan the Eternal" is made up of 4 parts
"Garan of Tav" Aka "People of the Crater" or "Part 1"
"Garan of Yu-Lac" or "Part 2"
& two unrelated short stories
"One Spell Wizard" & "Legacy from Sorn Fen"

"People of the Crater" was written in 1947 and was republished under that name in 4 publications
1: Fantasy Book # 1 [as Andrew North] (1947) Published by Fantasy, pgs. 4-18
2: Swordsmen in the Sky (1964) * by Donald A. Wollheim, Published by ACE, PB, # F-311, $0.40, 192pg
3: Alien Earth and Other Stories (1969) * Edited by Roger Elwood and Sam Moskowitz, Published by MacFadden, PB, 0-520-00219-0, #75-219, $0.75, 208pg
4: Magical Beginnings (2003) * Edited by Steven H. Silver & Martin H. Greenberg, Published by DAW, PB, 0-756-40121-6, $6.99, 352pg

And was Renamed "Garan of Tav" (acourding to the credits page) but is titled only as "Part 1" of "Garan the Eternal" (1973) Published by DAW, PB, 0-451-UQ104-5, # 45, $0.95, 206pg ~ cover by Jack Gaughan
I'm Still waiting for my copy of "Garan The Eternal" Published by Fantasy, HC, 0-686-02511-3, LCCN 73160575, $4.95, 199pg ~ cover by Morris Scott Dollens - (Should arrive in the next day or two but I am sure the credits will read the same.)

As for "Garan of Yu-Lac" that is "Part 2" of "Garan the Eternal" - the two parts published in the "Spaceway" Magazines only make up Chapters 1 thru 6. Chapters 7 thru 10 do not appear until published in "Garan The Eternal" Published by Fantasy in 1970 and DAW in 1973

I hope this makes sense because it is what I see from reading the stories and by comparing the many publications mentioned.

OK - I'll have to pull my copy out. But I will have to re-read both that and the magazine entries.

I'm pretty sure that GARAN THE ETERNAL is pulled together from other shorter items.
If "People of the Crater" became "Garan of Tav" and is part 1 of the GARAN book, then "Garan of Yu-Lac" is still composed of the two Spaceway Science Fiction entries.

Oh well, I might have some time for reading & comparing the pages this coming weekend.

Irene - you post

Well I thought that is what I have said twice now.

Quote:As for "Garan of Yu-Lac" that is "Part 2" of "Garan the Eternal" - the two parts published in the "Spaceway" Magazines only make up Chapters 1 thru 6. Chapters 7 thru 10 do not appear until published in "Garan The Eternal" Published by Fantasy in 1970 and DAW in 1973

The two Spaceway Science Fiction entries are indeed part of the total. But the story was finished with the addition of chapters 7 thru 10 in "Garan the Eternal"

Thanks - Jay
