assorted tv projects for Rob + Sam: 13, The Taking, Graphic City Limits

Assorted articles from UPI, ComingSoon.net and SciFi Wire, all from last month. Former Tribune and Universal exec William Hamm was named to head up the Ghost House Television division, described as "a sister company" to Ghost House Pictures. (Interestingly, it was Tribune's playing hardball with the old Studios USA, sticking shows like Cleo at midnight in favor of Tribune's own Andromeda series that led to the demise of syndicated genre shows.)

Their first project will be an adaptation of Dean Koontz's novel "The Taking."

Quote:....the new TV production group will focus on offering fare intended not only to entertain, but to scare as well.

The new banner gives Raimi a chance to work again with his Ghost House partner Rob Tapert, who he previously teamed up with for the TV series "Xena: Warrior Princess" and "Hercules."

"It's a pretty big range in TV, from something as edgy as 'Masters of Horror' on Showtime to something as soft as 'Ghost Whisperer' on CBS," Hamm explained. "As Rob likes to say, if it goes bump in the night, it probably qualifies."

.....

Ghost House is still looking for a writer to adapt Koontz's The Taking, with an eye on pitching it to networks late next month or in early February.

The book revolves around an apocalyptic rain that promotes an otherworldly invasion. Small-town thriller has as its unlikely heroes a husband and wife whose traumatic childhood may be key to beating evil.

Hamm is also working on what will now be Ghost House TV's first unscripted project, a haunted house reality-horror hybrid series in the works at the CW which could go into production by early spring.

Nothing really new, but an additional, more detailed article is in Variety. Excerpts:

Quote:Sam Raimi is making a major small-screen push, tapping former Tribune Entertainment and Universal exec William Hamm to run the newly formed Ghost House Television banner.

First scripted project for the unit is a miniseries adaptation of Dean
Koontz bestseller "The Taking" ....

Like its sibling Ghost House Pictures, TV unit will have a singular
focus: producing scary content.

"It's a pretty big range in TV, from something as edgy as 'Masters of
Horror' on Showtime to something as soft as 'Ghost Whisperer' on CBS,"
Hamm said. "As Rob likes to say, if it goes bump in the night, it
probably qualifies."

...

Raimi and Tapert originally hooked up with Hamm during their first foray
into TV, when Hamm served as senior VP of drama at Universal Television.

"Rob and I enjoyed having such creatively rich experiences with him on
'Hercules' and 'Xena,'" Raimi said. "We're eager to see where this new
partnership takes us."

In recent years, Raimi and Tapert have focused largely on film. Duo
formed Ghost House Pictures four years ago, partnering with Mandate
Pictures and producing pics such as "The Grudge" and "Boogeyman." Raimi
also has his deal at Sony for Buckaroo Entertainment, not to mention a
certain arachnid-themed superhero franchise he oversees.

Return to television will be methodical, with Ghost House Television
initially eschewing agency representation or an overall deal with a studio.

...

("The Taking") revolves around an apocalyptic rain that promotes an otherworldly invasion. Small-town thriller has as its unlikely heroes a husband and wife whose traumatic childhood may be key to beating evil....

As detailed in several other films, Sam's success with the Spider-Man films at Sony/Columbia has enabled him to get a producing gig with them, separate from his Ren Pics/Ghost House projects with Rob. Although both Seeker and Spartaus are apparently joint productions of Ren Pics and Buccaroo (Sam's Columbia-based company with Josh Donen....although that technically may just belong to Donen.)

The Hollywood Reporter (also here) reported a while back that Sam and Donen have something called "Stars Road Entertainment," and they've gotten a 2-year development deal with Sony Pictures TV, and "hired CBS senior vice president of drama Robert Zotnowski to spearhead the company's TV efforts."

Quote:Zotnowski said the goal for Stars Road is to expand its presence on broadcast TV and cable, with a primary focus on drama. Stars Road will develop material of all genres except horror, which will continue to be handled by Raimi's Ghost House Pictures.

But.... then it's also implied that Rob is involved with all of these:

Quote:"Sam, Rob and I have been very fortunate that our TV ideas have ended up as series," Donen said, "but we realized that we needed somebody dedicated full time to that business."

Tapert will continue to be involved in all of Raimi's TV projects.

So go figure. Smile
