...at the late-night, Sci-Fi (Channel) picture show... (Sat. night "originals")
#1
I've been keeping track of the growing popularity of the "originals" that Sci-Fi has been airing on Saturday nights - basically B-movies, often with provocative titles like "Mansquito" and "Attack of the Sabretooth" - in a couple of threads relating to several of these that Bruce Campbell has done. Thought I'd start a thread here to track ratings, what does best, upcoming films, etc.

Most of these are shot in central Europe - Bulgaria and Romania for example. The budget is rarely more than $1.5-2 million. Sci-Fi puts up half the $$ in exchange for premiere rights for US cable, and the producers make the remainder via dvd sales. Occasionally a feature or direct-to-dvd film ends up getting sold to Sci-Fi instead - for example, the adaptation of Marvel's "Man-Thing" was feared to be box office poison, so after the fact it became a "made-for-Sci-Fi 'original.' " A European film version of "The Ring of the Nibelung" is being promoted as a mini-series and is now renamed "Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King." And so forth.

Anyway, here are some comparative ratings for recent Saturday night "creature feature" premieres on Sci-Fi - the list is very incomplete - just whenever I happen to notice the ratings, and remember to jot 'em down. If it's an old rerun, I have that noted - these are usually rerun at 1 AM after the 9 PM premiere...then again at 9 PM on Thursdays, so people who catch it then may not have seen it the first time around.

NOTE: in recent months, Sci-Fi has been airing "premieres" of direct-to-dvd releases - sometimes on Saturday nights in the primo "original" slot, and more often on Sunday and Tuesday nights.

Pterodactyl (8/22/05 - 8/28/05) - 2.6

Hey, they've got some stars I like watching in some of those! Good move on their part, I think. I'm more likely to check out a B-Movie if Robert Beltran is in it, than, say B-Bomb regular Casper VanDien (which I see they've tapped for one of their productions).

[COLOR="navy"]Ol' Casper has been in a bunch of them!

Dracula 3000 , Python, Shark Attack, The Fallen Ones (his comment, and I quote: "I thought it was intelligently written, for a 42-foot-tall mummy movie.") :bounce:

Coming up next: the aforementioned Meltdown, as well as "The Curse of King Tut's Tomb" which would appear to be for Hallmark. In fact... our boy was mentioned by Kathy Griffin in USA Today a few weeks, back, in an article on how the lesser known movies with the C-list and D-list stars get released in February:

Quote:Call them offseason actors, who rarely show up at the multiplex in the competitive heat of summer or the Oscar-contender crunch of late fall. The budgets of their films would barely cover the tab for Angelina and Brad's baby formula. They are the ones at celebrity events being elbowed aside for the "real" stars.

"This is when Casper Van Dien gets to have his moment in the sun," says comic Kathy Griffin about the actor who zapped giant bugs in Starship Troopers.

Beltran was also in "Manticore," back last fall, along with Chase Masterson (aka that Dabo girl from DS9) and Heather Donahue (aka the "I'm soooo scared" girl from "Blair Witch.") As well as Jonas Talkington and Michael Cory Davis, the guys I interviewed - links in that thread about the Bruce interview!)

Here's the most recent set of ratings, with Vicky's movie making the top ten:

Battlestar Galactica 1.8
Stargate Atlantis 1.8
Stargate SG-1 1.6
House of the Dead 2 1.4
Jaws II 1.3
Resident Evil 1.2
Jaws III 1.2
John Doe 1.1
Route 666 1.1
Shark Attack 3 1.1

Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 2/6/06 - 2/12/06

I find it hilarious that Vicky's zombie movie beat "Resident Evil," but of course that was the umpteenth rerun for the latter.

........................

Here are the ratings (of films that made the top 10 in their respective weeks) continued from above:

Grizzly Rage (6/16/08 - 6/22/08) - 1.2 (3 PM Sunday rerun)

Odysseus - Voyage to the Underworld (4/7/08 - 4/13/08) - 1.2

OK, this is about the funniest thing I've ever seen!

Battlestar Galactica 1.7
Rottweiler 1.6
Stargate SG-1 1.6
Watchers 3 1.5
Watchers Reborn 1.5
Stargate Atlantis 1.5
John Doe 1.1
Watchers 2 1.1
The Beast, part two 1.0
The Abyss 1.0

Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 2/13/06 - 2/19/06

Rottweiler - which was made in Spain of all places ostensibly for a big screen release overseas, had no "name" actors, and may have been the worst film Sci-Fi has ever aired.....beat out both Stargates in the ratings! And edges in on BSG by only a tenth of a rating point!

OK, now let's take a look at other shows "Rottweiler" - and three old direct-to-video "Watchers" movies (at least one was before the invention of dvd  ) beat out that week:

dozens of eps of the Twilight Zone
Passions
an Amazing Stories marathon
all Ripley's Believe It Or Not reruns
all Stargate reruns
all X-Files reruns
all Surface reruns (and that's a new, big-budget network show)
a Roswell marathon (another recent network big-$$ show)
all Ghost Hunters reruns
an In Search of marathon
a First Wave marathon
the BSG rerun

.....................................................

 I'm serious, man, Sci-Fi needs to recognize that there's a definite nitch for this kind of viewing. It's easy, kick-your-feet-up-and-relax kind of stuff! They should dig into their vault and throw some reruns in there from time to time. Say some Invisible Man, for example! :bg:

Oh they very definitely realize it - they started experimenting a few years back (like late 90's I guess) with airing some direct-to-dvd films in primo prime time slots, and they did well. (ABC Family - which was Fox Family before that, and just the Family Channel before that, did that with some of those Olsen Twins movies that were sold at Wal-marts and so forth, and struck gold too.) So they began promoting the idea of "originals' - basically collaborating with the direct-to-dvd people, and airing them as "premieres" on Sci-Fi. And the ratings continue to soar. Among their earliest smashes were that looooow budget film w/ Bruce and Chase Masterson, "Terminal Invasion," and the bigger-budget, worse-looking "Interceptor Force 2" with Olivier Gruner (when you need a French-speaking kick-boxing champ, and you aren't a high-class-enough operation to get van Damme  :bounce: ) plus Xena's daughter Adrienne Wilkinson and Bill Clinton's mistress Elizabeth Gracern.

I think they actually have shown some "Invisible Man" eps - they do these day-long mini-marathons - they used to do Hercules like that, about once a month. They'll show a block of 6-7 hours of one show all day long. If there are enough episodes (unlike, say, Timecop or John Doe or Firefly, which only had a dozen or so eps filmed) and there seems to be a demand, then they'll add it to the regular schedule.

Did you know there was a previous "Invisible Man" series? Mid-70's, on NBC, starring former Man from UNCLE star David McCallum. Lasted...oh, 13 weeks maybe. Wink

Hey did you catch my two follow-up interviews w/ Bruce's co-stars, Michael and Jonas? Lots of insight into these creature features! :bg:

invisible man would be really cool. still, there's stuff i'm looking forward to. after learning that tolkien was influenced by what is now Dark Kingdom, i really want to check the movie out, and having Loken in the movie doesnt hurtSmile

Loken really seems to like the B-Movies. She did that one with the monsterous Uwe Boll, Bloodrayne, and now a Sci-Fi one? That's cool, I guess. Better someone who just enjoys the work than another ladder climbing Hollywood type.

bloodrayne was terrible -- hopefully she won't have to suffer another theatrical release like that.

Sciguy, I don't know how much you're into filmmaking and whatnot, but someone else had posted this article on the guy who made Bloodrayne (and other horrible films) a while ago: http://www.cinemablend.com/feature.php?id=209

Making a B-Movie out of love for the genre-which I think most of these Sci-Fi "Originals" are, is quite different than making them for the reasons he does.

Well, I think the key with this is that having been in the Terminator film.... that puts her at the top of the list for genre movies... while at the bottom of the list for movies that go to Julia Stiles and Kirsten Dunst and Gwyneth Paltrow. So she can choose to have supporting roles... or be the star in something that may not be Shakespeare.

Same strategy as Bruce Campbell.

Same reason almost all of these creature features have some genre "name" attached to them. Like "Dragon Storm," which didn't advertise "starring Maxwell Caulfield, from Grease 2, and directed by the guy who played Flounder in Animal House" - but instead said "starring Lord of the Rings' John Rhys-Davies" .... even though he only had a smaller supporting role.

So people like Dean Cain and Casper van Dien often turn up in them.

Even the rerun of the 9-years-old "Odyssey" mini-series proclaimed that it featured "Lord of the Rings' Christopher Lee" even though he's only on screen for about 2 minutes... instead of saying "starring Mambo Kings star Armande Assante, and Johnson Family Vacation star Vanessa Williams."

Note: Dark Kingdom (i.e. the Siegfried/Brunhilde story) was actually a big-screen movie in Europe, hence the international cast.... plus Alicia Witt. (Although Kristanna Lokken was technically born in the US.) There's a pretty extensive site for it, linked above.

BTW, for more on sci-fi "originals," see the interviews with Jonas Talkington and Michael Cory Davis (the former is just a rough draft version though, and not "officially" online yet. So shhhh. Wink ) And then here are some articles in the mainstream media:

http://www.geocities.com/xhlist/USA_Today_article.html

http://www.geocities.com/xhlist/NYTimesArticle.html

Quote:"They're good at the 'D' word, demographics," said Bruce Campbell, a star of B movies who also wrote, directed and starred in the "Screaming Brain" film, to be shown in September. "I think they're micromarketing," he said, "which in this fragmented world makes sense. They're saying, 'Who's at home on Saturday night?' "

The answer might be surprising. Nearly half of Sci Fi's audience is female, and in the highly sought-after 25-to-54-year-old demographic category, Sci Fi is the No. 4 basic cable network on Saturdays, behind TNT, USA and TBS.

Sci Fi's foray into Saturday night mayhem began in 2002, when network executives realized that cheap, independently made genre pictures, an important element of their programming mix, were hardly being produced any more. So, said Tom Vitale, the Sci Fi Channel's senior vice president for original movies "We had a choice of recycling older movies or going out and trying to create original movies ourselves. We went back to these producers who made genre movies, and asked them if they wanted to make them with us."

................

And even lower-rated films that still got a million viewers or so, and made it to the top then for their respective weeks, thereby beating out 150+ hours of other programming on the network:

Grendel (10/27/08 - 11/2/08) - 0.8 (11 PM Sat. rerun)

By way of comparison, here's how the same week fared for syndicated genre shows. i.e. shows that air on your local networks, most often UPN and WB, but sometimes on the others (but then either on weekend afternoons or after midnight.) Just a few years back TV was full of first-run syndicated shows (Beastmaster, Xena, Deep Space Nine, Andromeda, etc.) but now I think all of these are reruns:

Alias - 2.0
Smallville - 1.9
Stargate SG-1 - 1.7
Stargate Atlantis - 1.5
Star Trek: Enterprise - 1.3
Farscape - 1.1
The Outer Limits - 1.0
The Twilight Zone - 1.0
Sabrina - 0.7

Source: Nielsen Galaxy Report, 2/20/06 - 2/26/06

And as you see, a couple stretch the definition of "science fiction."

Alas, how the mighty are fallen - in their heyday, XWP or Trek would have gotten a 6.5 or higher.

Yep. Now it's reality and such that gets the big numbers. Television continues to evolve...or is it degenerate?

Well, the good news is that shows that do take a chance sometimes succeed - "Desperate Housewives" (which takes the standard "Knots Landing"-style soap opera and turns it into a very dark comedy) and "Lost" (which uses "X-Files/Twilight Zone"-ish story-telling techniques... but spends most of its time on really really good characterization and acting) have really taken off. And "Medium" and "Ghost Whisperer" seem to be doing well, although most of the other sci-fi and horror shows are starting to fall by the wayside.

august Wrote:Hey did you catch my two follow-up interviews w/ Bruce's co-stars, Michael and Jonas? Lots of insight into these creature features! :bg:

I've read the one with Michael Corey Davis. I liked his comparison of NY to LA when it comes to the attitudes of the actors and the impression the public has towards actors. He really did alot of work for Sci-Fi, didn't he? Sort of like the old studio system!

 Wait 'til you get to Jonas - he's done like 20! Up next.... "SS Doomtrooper!" :bounce:

But yep - Michael has had decent roles in six of them:

he played the heroic, braided, muscular demolitions expert who got chomped by "Cerberus," a heroic, braided, muscular SEAL team member who got chomped by raptors in "Raptor Island," a heroic, braided, muscular guerilla resistance commando who got chomped (or zapped, actually) by aliens in "Alien Siege," the heroic muscular, braided mission commander who got chomped by giant alien termites in "Alien Apocalypse," and a heroic, muscular, braided Army ranger who gets chomped by the manticore in "Manticore."

Haven't caught his appearance in "Path of Destruction" (previously called "Stratosphere") yet; wonder what he plays, and what happens to his character? :bg:
