Go see it, great movie. Not exactly like the series but well worth your time. What is your opinion
P.S. I had heard that it was just the first in a trilogy and it shows.

I haven't seen it yet, but I hear it is very good.

Rats. I wrote a whole review on this.
Basically, even if you're not interested in Science Fiction, there's plenty, more than enough actually, for anyone. The movie is not technology driven, but rather character and plot driven in a nice balance.
I would definately see this a second or third time in the theaters, and it will certainly become part of my DVD movie collection.

how does it add up in relation to the show? pick up right from end? similar storylines? etc?

That was part of my review.
The movie picks up a few months (six maybe) to a year after the end of the show, depending on which version you run with (televised or the unreleased episodes from the DVDs). It doesn't specify the time frame, but we get a sense of it from the missing characters and their reappearance. Inara is not currently part of the crew and neither is Book, although they work back into the plot rather nicely.
Whedon was quoted as saying that the movie is roughly equivelant to a season or a half-season of shows (I can't recall which) and I would agree. The plot focuses mostly around River Tam, but it doesn't revolve around her. The entire crew is back in fine, fine form.
For my money, I would say this is a perfect continuation of the series. Firefly was quite excellent and Serenity continues it very nicely.

All things considered, I liked the movie better than the tv shows. Joss has taken the time to explain the characters a little better. The Inara problem has been treated in a better manner. In the tv show, her and Mal were at an impass. He could not really trust her until she had given up her job for a considerable time. After all, about the first time she said:" dear, you will have to sleep on the couch tonight, I have a paying customer.", the love story would end. And she was not ready to quite. The movie has Inara and mal at the stage where they can move forward.

I enjoyed it alot. I hadn't seen any of the series before that, I was just in the mood for some sci-fi, so I went and saw it. Then I got the box set. Enjoying it so far.

What a kick *** movie. I truly enjoyed it. Are the episodes of Firefly as good as that movie was?
I truly enjoyed Mal, River was awesome. Those reaver things (or whatever they were) were scary as hell.
I know there were inside fanboy stuff that Joss put in there for the Firefly fans that I probably missed.
I'm going to rent the Firefly discs and check it out.
I hope the movie does well because I'd love to see a sequel.

If you want to know what happens between the show and the movie, there is a comic book series made covering that time frame. The Comics were written by Joss so it stays true to the story and I would say it's an official part. There is a trade paperback of the whole comic series being released in January but the individual comics should be out there.
The movie is very good. I will be seeing it again this week. I do have a problem with one part in particular but since this is not a spoiler thread.....

The episodes are very good and well worth the $30 or $35 the DVDs are running for now.

Not that much, actually. I can't think of anything truly off hand. Can anyone else?

Now that I think it over, the scariest thing about serenity is the idea of that is what society will look like after hundreds of years of liberal government; being taken care of by a loving government who knows what is best for it's citizens. a perfect socialist world.
on the other hand, the frontier worlds are a perfect example of Laizze faire capitolism. and the devil take the hindmost. Repression cannot exist alongside freedom, therefore the frontier had to be crushed.

Um, thats the political reality in the Serenity Universe.
--------
Of course there were things that only fans of the tv series would get. I can't remember them all, and nothing that major:
1. Probably only fans of the show would notice the toy dinosaurs on Wash's controls.
2. Pretty much only fans of the show would know Inara's profession
3. Only fans of show would know that Wash and Zoey are married.

4. Fans of the show would actually find Book and Wash's death significant.

5. Would know that it is the Anglo-Alliance
etc etc

Saw it on Saturday and was really impressed with it. It had all the elements that Joss Whedon is famous for: characters over the action, whipcrack dialogue that reminds you somewhat of Aaron Sorkin's scripts, and just general excellence. Everyone should go and see this film, it's fan-bloody-tastic!
