Passing of Andre Norton, March 17, 2005

The following is copied from e-mail from Tim Bolgeo (LibertyCon, Chattanooga) to everyone he knew was interested in Andre. There is nothing I can add that SUE and TIM didn't already say.

THE PASSING OF A GREAT AND NOBLE LADY

From: Sue Stewart <hoodoosoo@comcast.net>

I regret to inform you that our "Lady" is gone. On March 17, 2005 at
2:23a.m., Andre (Norton) departed on her final journey. She left
peacefully in her sleep with myself, Ollie and Mark at her bedside.

She will be missed terribly and mourned deeply. Her passing leaves a
void that can never be filled, as we shall never see the likes of her
again. Knowing her has made me a better person.

Andre requested that, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint
Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis Tennessee or Veteranarian Services,
c/o The Noah Fund, P.O. Box 10128, Murfreesboro Tn. 37129, in her
memory. Because of her love of animals, Andre herself contributed to the
Noah Fund which is for people who can not afford medical treatment for
their pets.

After coming to live with us, and, as our feelings for one another grew,
I began calling her "Meemaw". This past week, she said to me, "I
have won many awards in my life, I am a Grand Master, some call me the First
Lady of Fantasy, and others call me The Grand Damme of Fantasy, but the
title I am most proud of is "Meemaw". Eventually, everyone followed suit
and "Meemaw" it was. Finally, she had gained the family she had longed
for most of her life.

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize Kathy Vinson L.P.N.
and Jan Hoffmann who were instrumental in the day to day care of Meemaw.
She developed a special closeness and friendship with them and, their
feelings were mutual.

Thanks to all of you for your phone calls, cards, flowers and gifts.
Knowing everyone cared so much meant a great deal to her. Her modesty
made it difficult for her to fully comprehend the magnitude of the
feelings her fans and followers had for her. However, near the end she
finally realized how much she was loved and admired by so many.

Sincerely,

Sue Stewart

I HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE IN THAT I HAVE KNOWN MS. ANDRE FOR OVER 20
YEARS. I WAS INTRODUCED TO HER BY THE LATE ROBERT ADAMS IN A VISIT TO
HER HOME IN WINTER PARK, FLORIDA. I FOUND HER TO BE A GREAT AND
GRACIOUS LADY AND FELT PRIVILEGED TO BE IN HER PRESENCE.

WHEN SHE MOVED UP TO MURFREESBORO, TENNESSEE, AROUND 8 TO 10 YEARS AGO,
I WAS PLEASANTLY SURPRISED THAT SHE HADN'T CHANGED A BIT. STILL AS
BEAUTIFUL AND GRACIOUS AS AT FIRST TIME I MET HER. OVER THE YEARS, I
HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE IN GETTING TO KNOW MS. ANDRE BETTER AND HAVE
COME TO REALIZE THAT SHE WAS EVEN A GREATER LADY THAN I HAD THOUGHT
BEFORE.

ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS, I HAD TOLD MS. ANDRE ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS
WHAT A GREAT IMPACT SHE HAD ON MY GENERATION AND MY CHILDREN'S
GENERATION. SHE GUIDED US INTO ENGINEERING AND SCIENTIFIC CAREER FIELDS
BECAUSE SHE INSTILLED THE WONDER OF SCIENCE INTO EACH OF US AT AN EARLY
AGE. MS. ANDRE WOULD JUST SIT THERE AND BLUSH AND SAY I WAS OVER
EMPHASIZING HER IMPACT ON THE GENERATIONS. SHE WAS A MODEST AND LOVELY
PERSON WHO HONESTLY DIDN'T BELIEVE IN HER OWN GREATNESS. IF ANYTHING, I
DIDN'T DO HER THE JUSTICE SHE DESERVED.

I WILL FONDLY REMEMBER MS. ANDRE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND THANK GOD
THAT I HAD THE GOOD FORTUNE IN MEETING ONE OF THE GREATEST OF MY
PERSONAL HEROES.

SLEEP IN PEACE MS. ANDRE WITH THE THOUGHT THAT YOU WILL BE REMEMBERED
AND LOVED BY ALL OF YOUR SPIRITUAL CHILDREN YOU LEAVE BEHIND. NOW AND
IN THE FUTURE.

Je suis desolee.

At the urging of Roger Zelazny, I once wrote Ms. Norton to tell her how important she was in the forming of my tastes in literature.

She responded to me graciously and kindly and I greatly regret that I didn't correspond with her further, as in the past few years, I had been reflecting again on her influence on me and its importance.

She goes into the great mystery before us. I can only imagine what new stories she will find in her to tell.

*Bows head* Fare thee well, Great Lady and friend.
Act my age? I'm too young to be THAT old!

To Andre's Family, friends and fans...my deepest sympathy to all. To be honest I had never heard of her until I came here (to the SF Fandom boards)in general. Now I wish I had.

Take care all.

Some of you may have wondered why I haven't posted yet. It's been about 10 hours since I read that The Lady was gone.

I was actually waiting for a meeting to begin, late, and decided to check my home mail while I waited. I had hardly read the news when the meeting began, and I had to work.

I'm afraid that I'm in deep denial. I didn't get back to my email until late in the day. It was all I was able to do, email Sue, check this site, wondering what I'm going to do.

I have a copy of THREE HANDS FOR SCORPIO on order from the book store. This is the last book written by Andre Norton. Sure there are the co-authored books, and I really appreciate the work done by those co-authors. But never again will there be something that only Andre worked on, cared about, loved, and gave to us to make our own.

Sue enclosed a couple of photographs in an email. One was a photo of Andre Norton, used on the blurbs in a couple of book jackets. The other was a photo of THE PRINCE COMMANDS and THREE HANDS FOR SCORPIO. As Sue put it this was "The Alpha and the Omega" of Andre Norton's writing career.

I will be forever grateful to Sue, Ollie and Mark, and a team of other friends, that made these last 6 months a wonderful time for Andre. She was, to my eyes, part of a family, with consideration for her needs.

I am sorry for myself that a good friend, and marvelous person is gone. I am glad that I still have access to her within the pages of the books that she wrote. The written word will be her lasting legacy.

There are no more words of joy, for Andre has gone ahead of us to places we can not even imagine. We are left with only grief and tears. Peace be with you, dear Lady. May your new journey be joyful. Blessed Be.

I doubt if anyone could quantify the influence this lady has had on their lives. She opened doors of wonder that I am still exploring today.

I was never fortunate enough to meet her in person, but I feel her loss as if I had. The phrase "She will be greatly missed" is a massive understatement.

It is with deep sorrow that I write this short note. Ms Norton was a great influence on my development as a reader and dreamer. I remember well the first SF book I ever read "Star Rangers" over 35 years ago. Through her books, I've enjoyed, learned and explored the areas "out of the box".
"When a man comes to the end of any road let him remember that the end is not yet and a new way shall open for him." Zicti, from "Star Rangers"

We have lost one of the bright stars. Andre touched so many lives and helped start the careers of so many with her generosity and kindness. Her friends in fur and flesh will always miss her. However, she has left a great legacy that will keep her alive in hearts forever.

Her passing has left a hole in my self. I have been reading her stories since I was around nine or ten. That has been 40 years. She was one of the first authors in Science fiction/fantasy I read as a kid. She could weave a story and take you places that seemed so real. I still go back and read her old novels of the Witch World to this day. I will miss her stories.

Farewell, Gracious Lady,

Although we have expected this event, still it hurts. You have passed beyond our ken, beyond the pain and burden of this life, but I believe you have but entered a new life. I don't know what that life may look like, what its conditions and limits may be, but I have no doubt that you will touch and enlighten the lives in that world, as surely as you have the lives in this one.

Those of us who remain can not help but have regrets. I regret that I waited so long to write to you and thus come to know you personally. I can only envy those who have known you longer than I. As a tribute to you, we who remain can only do our best to live up to the example you have shown us, in your writing and in your living.

You have gone, but your legacy remains, and by that, some small part of you will remain with us always.

While I never had the pleasure of knowing Ms. Norton, her books have been part of my life for, I don't know, thirty-five years, maybe longer. How sad that she is no more. But what rare delight she created and gave to us all.
