The sad thing about my gambling career is that my mother was the real magician in the family. My sister would call me up and say, "Where's Mom?" And I drive over to the casino to check on her.

She'd be surrounded by trays of slot machine tokens. She'd hand me a tray and say, "Play that machine. It's about to pay."

That defies all wisdom about how slot machines are supposed to work (and I've written hundreds of articles about gambling - I have a pretty good idea for how skeptical gambling experts are about this kind of intuition).

Mom was right more often than not.

My gambling success ended when she moved to another state.
