Source: Variety October 26, 2004
Ghost House Pictures, the joint venture of Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Senator International, is opening up a Dibbuck Box. Ghost House and Columbia Pictures just released #1 The Grudge this weekend in theaters.
Also on Ghost House's production plate is 30 Days of Night, which Collateral screenwriter Stuart Beattie is adapting from Steve Niles' comic book series for Senator and Columbia.
The Grudge writer Stephen Susco will pen Dibbuk Box, reports Variety. The story is a fictional retelling of L.A. Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "Jinx in a Box," about an antique wooden box purchased on eBay that contained an evil spirit and was brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after WWII.
The film will center around a cursed relic containing mysterious familial tokens that is mistakenly purchased. The new owner must solve its mystery to save her own family.

You beat me to it, Tobias! :bg:
Here's what they say at Scifi.com wire:
Raimi Company Opens Box
Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures, which has a hit with this week's The Grudge, will develop Dibbuk Box, a supernatural horror thriller film, Variety reported. Ghost House, the joint venture of Raimi, Rob Tapert and Senator International, is also developing the vampire comic-book adaptation 30 Days of Night, the trade paper reported.
Grudge writer Stephen Susco will draft Dibbuk Box, a fictional retelling of Los Angeles Times reporter Leslie Gornstein's story "Jinx in a Box," about an antique wooden box purchased on eBay that contained an evil spirit and was brought to America by a Holocaust survivor after World War II, the trade paper reported.
The Grudge, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, took in $40 million in its opening weekend.

Dibbuk Box also lives - The Hollywood Reporter reports that a director has been signed:
Quote:Award-winning Danish filmmaker Ole Bornedal has been given the key to direct Dibbuk Box, a horror thriller from Lionsgate that Sam Raimi and his Ghost House partner Rob Tapert are producing.
..........
The film is in the vein of The Exorcist or The Shining, based on real events that transpired after a family wound up in possession of a haunted box, setting off a harrowing struggle to rid themselves of the box's evil curse.
Juliet Snowden and Stiles White wrote the script. The origins of the project lie in a Los Angeles Times article written by Leslie Gornstein, titled A Jinx in a Box.
The real-life box gained notoriety in 2004 when it sold on eBay after causing inexplicable bad fortune to its owners, which was attributed to a dibbuk -- a malevolent spirit of Jewish folklore trapped in the haunted box...
The film is set to start shooting in January. Bornedal is also working with them on an English language version of his Danish-language film "The Substitute" (see above) - either for Ghost House Underground, or possibly their other subsidiary, Spooky Pictures (which focuses on more of the teen/PG-13 audience.) Scott Derrickson may be directing that one.

Dibbuk Box seems to be picking up steam (although I'll believe it when I see it) - from IGN:
Quote:The Closer's Kyra Sedgwick has joined the supernatural thriller Dibbuk Box for Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and Lionsgate.
Deadline reports that Sedgwick "will play a mom whose youngest child becomes strangely attached to an antique wooden box purchased at a yard sale." Quicker than you can say "evil spirt," it turns out the box contains a soul-devouring dibbuk. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was recently cast as Sedgwick's ex-husband.
The script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White is allegedly inspired by a true story. Ole Bornedal will direct. The film opens Oct. 28
And from an earlier article:
Quote:Morgan will play a divorced dad whose daughter starts acting crazy after buying an old wooden box at a yard sale. Quicker than you can say "evil spirit," it turns out the box contains a dibbuk. The script by Juliet Snowden and Stiles White is allegedly inspired by a true story.

I haven't had a chance to see it yet but I hear that as horror movies go it's pretty good.
