Well, they certainly have quite a few to choose from, as detailed here.
But I am not wild about remakes - why not create something original? Papillon for example was hugely successful on its own, even though there had been plenty of other books and films set there.

I think opposition from the French government has effectively killed almost all interest in telling the story (or stories). And most of those movies fictionalize everything, I think. I don't know how accurate "Papillon" is (being based on an autobiography).
The movie was remade by Red Granite Pictures and premiered in September 2017 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It stars Charlie Hunnam ("Pacific Rim").
